ESL Business Teacher Articles: Reverse Culture Shock

Living abroad is never easy. The first thing that usually occurs is one has culture shock as they experience new insight on how others in the world do things. We then likely compare these experiences back to our own culture and decide if they are pros or cons. The more time we spend in that culture the more we adapt and get comfortable with dealing the situations. Usually this will strengthen our beliefs in the positive or negative aspects. At some point we will return to our home country. It is here we then experience reverse culture shock. The more time you had spent in the other country or other countries, the bigger the impact will be. Then you are lost in a new world as you you miss the pros of the country you visited and yet bothered by the cons of your home country. You are perpetually torn as you know you can never take the good systems back home and have a longing feeling to return back to the country you had once lived.
