ESL Business Teacher Articles: Common Core

Common Core is the new standard for education in many state schools. However, the program has been receiving a lot of negative feedback about being too complicated and hard for children and parents as well. Being a parent myself, I have had to read the instructions and figure out what they are trying to accomplish in the homework many times but have found myself quite confused and frustrated. I worry later down the road I will not be able to teach my own child because the approach is very different from the way I was taught so I too need to be re-educated! Oh boy.

In this lesson, we discuss with the client about:

  • What is common core
  • Why are parents in an uproar
  • What are some of the comments and jokes people are making
  • Discuss the article – takeaways, agree/disagree, and etc.
